Style Spotlight

Art Deco

Art Deco is a style that is so reminiscent of a specific period of time, it tends to be tricky to incorporate the style without feeling you are in a 1920’s speakeasy - think Great Gatsby style interiors. Art Deco uses rich colors, luxe materials, and is typically described as feeling opulent and avant-garde. Opulent and avant-garde is not usually what we have in mind when designing our spaces at Duet, but Art Deco’s influence runs deeper than those surface level descriptions of the style. When Art Deco is incorporated strategically, spaces can be beautiful, opulent, and luxe, while still feeling current.

Stephan Julliard, Hugo Toro

Art Deco has its roots in the Art Nouveau style of the early 20th century, but refined it - taking Art Nouveau’s organic, flowing designs and modernizing them into more geometric, streamlined motifs. Art Deco was thought of to symbolize wealth and sophistication at the height of its popularity, around 1920-1930. Typical patterns usually include chevrons and triangular shapes, sunbursts, stepped forms, and sweeping curves. Materiality is just as important as the forms in the Art Deco style - rich, bold, colors done in luxe materials - velvet, marble, brass are synonymous with the style.

Curbed New York, Max Touhey

Art Deco is a style that, typically these days, you don’t see a whole room done in the style (this is when it starts to feel Gatsby-esque). But there are pieces, colors, and motifs that reminisce of the Art Deco style that are incorporated into modern furnishings, accessories, tiles, wallpaper, and lighting. As you learn the shapes and patterns commonly found in the Art Deco style, you will start to notice their immense influence throughout today’s designs and furnishings.

World of Interiors, Adam Stěch

Art Deco is a beautiful and fun design style that can create the most decadent and luxe interiors. While it isn’t common to see most people today to do their entire space in the style like they did in the 1920’s, Art Deco’s influence in the design world continues to be seen today - you just have to know what you are looking for.
